Enjoy a Few Outdoor Activities with the Kids in Marin County
Sometimes you just have to get out of San Francisco, and see what awaits you across one of its two bridges. We often find ourselves in Marin County more often than I care to admit. I feel sometimes like I’m cheating on my true love, San Francisco. Depending on the day and our mood, we will usually end up in one of our favorite Marin haunts: China Camp (playing on the beach); Samuel P. Taylor Park (bike rides to the swimming holes); Lake Lagunitas (fishing); Fairfax (just hanging out); San Anselmo (Legos); fairfax ca Bolinas (to get our hippy fix).
I find that in Marin the people are a mix of hippy-chic, alternative-elite and soccer mom. They definitely enjoy and appreciate the ease of suburbia and the bounty of their land. Marin has a ton to offer kids and their parents in way of outdoor activities and other experiences.
We always start at Bay Area Discovery Museum (BADM), where we are members. BADM is at Fort Baker in Sausalito, at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. It has a number of entertaining indoor and outdoor activities, which makes BADM a great place to visit, even when the weather is lousy. Nearby is the The Cavollo Point Hotel. I wish I didn’t live so close, because I am dying to stay there. The Cavollo Point Hotel is one of the most luxurious San Francisco hotels. Not only can you sleep in an officer’s residence, they have cooking classes and a healing arts center. I need healing — lots of it!
After our excursion to BADM, this mommy usually needs a coffee break from the older two before heading to the Terra Linda Pool, by way of the Marin Farmer’s Market. If time permits, I will drop the 6- and 9-year-old off at Play Well Lego Center in San Anselmo. This place is a life saver for any mom needing a little time alone without feeling guilty. The kids are kept busy working with Lego blocks to create whatever their imaginations can conceive, including electronic creations fairfax ca and ones that light up! You pay in 15-minute increments so you don’t have to worry about being back right on time.
Marin has, what I believe to be, the best farmer’s market for all ages and palettes. It trumps Ferry Building twofold. Although I do love the one in Alemany, for its low-key, no-scene atmosphere and affordable produce, the kids get bored quickly there. The Marin Civic Center Farmer’s Market has a great selection of produce, meats, cheeses, pastries, breads, as well as jumpy houses, clowns, music and horse rides! It pulls quite the crowd, which is proof that it continues to be a hit with parents and kids alike. This farmer s market is held year-round on Thursdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Marin Civic Center. Take the North San Pedro Exit off Highway 101 in San Rafael.
Our final destination is Terra Linda Pool in San Rafael. This community pool has a diving board and toddler pool, and it comes with a playground and an open lot where the kids can practice their skateboarding and bike riding. There are also some great neighborhood paths to explore. We grab sandwiches from Scotty’s Market across the way and we settle down for some swimtime. After a few hours we skip on over to Three Twins Ice Cream across fairfax ca the street and enjoy their delicious organic fare. Terra Linda Pool is located at 670 Del Ganado Road, North San Rafael (415-485-3344).
I have been lucky enough fairfax ca to call San Francisco home for over 20 years and am thrilled to be raising my kids in such a beautiful and diverse town. Although I have traveled far and wide I still think we live in the best city on this planet. My motley crew and I traverse the streets of this lovely city exploring every nook and cranny via scooter, skateboard and stroller. Who would have guessed, certainly not Tim Bowen, that he would start his own business, Play-Well TEKnologies, and be adored by parents and kids alike? A 20-year resident of the West End Neighborhood of San Rafael , Tim's circuitous route to fame included turning the master bedroom of his home into a LEGO incubator. Instead of planning his career path, he let his inquisitive mind lead to jobs and projects that he found interesting and challenging.
You might call Tim Bowen the Steve Jobs of LEGO except he started in a bedroom instead of a garage. The mission for Play-Well TEKnology mirror's Tim's own life experience and his desire to nurture the skills he found valuable: an inquisitive mind, creative expression, self-reliance, self-confidence, an appreciation for how things work and problem solving.

According to Tim, an after school Science Lab at Davidson society telegrams Middle School where LEGO was one small aspect of the program somehow morphed into a dynamic business. First Sun Valley Elementary called and asked him to run a summer camp, Mill Valley, and San Francisco followed and the business took off. Before long he leveraged the LEGO system into a fun and creative way for kids to learn engineering concepts and experiment with how things work. Today you can find Play-Well TEKnologies in 8 states offerring summer camps, special and seasonal events, parties, classes, and team builiding. You can also purchase teaching kits.
Born in Holland, Tim and his 4 siblings traveled the world with his father, who was a respected engineer with an itch for interesting projects. The family passed through the U.S. for short stints but most of Tim's formative years were spent in Peru and Libya. He graduated from Amherst College with a solid liberal arts education and a major in geology. Tim said his liberal arts education combined with geology gave him skills to be a good detective, solve problems society telegrams and to understand a story on many different levels from science and archeology to math, history and literature.

It s the time of year for making New Year s resolutions. I m not big on New Year s resolutions and it isn t that I m not big on change and transformation and even that scary religious word, repentance, which John the Baptist uses in the verses preceding our passage in Matthew this morning, when he s calling people to come to the Jordan River to be baptized. [1] No, I m all for transformation; in fact, I believe it s the point of the life of faith. But as for New Year s resolutions, I agree with someone who said, My resolution is to not break any resolutions. As long as I don t make any other resolutions, I should be OK.
New Year s resolutions just seem like an opportunity to fail. As much as we might want or need to change, do we really need more reasons to feel bad about ourselves? radio gora dragas A friend startled me with her New Year s resolution this year. She said it s more of a goal somehow, I like that word better but in any event, radio gora dragas her resolution or goal is to be able to walk into a room a party, or the locker room at the gym and not do that instantaneous radio gora dragas assessment that many women do without even thinking about it, where she compares herself to the other women. Is she thinner, younger, prettier? This is personally challenging to me and I think it s challenging to everyone, not necessarily with regard to appearance but with respect to whatever it is that makes you feel, deep down inside, as though you re not good enough. Do you walk into Back to School Night thinking, Are my kid s grades as good; did my son get into as good a college; does my daughter get into more trouble than that perfect family sitting next to me? Keller has been involved in reading programs since the beginning of his career as a writer and illustrator of children’s books. As a member of the New York School Volunteer pablo voz romantica Program, Keller visited schools throughout New York City where he performed readings, followed by question-and-answer sessions about the writing and illustration process. “To meet your audience on such a personal level is rare gift,” Keller explains, “and as much as I enjoy reading the stories, I also enjoy sharing the creative process. I believe it’s of great value for children to see how a story begins, from a drawing or a line of text, and how it evolves into a finished book, in print or as an e-book.”

On February 1st, 2013, our non-profit partner, Play-Well Outreach , ran an intergenerational program with residents of Tamalpais retirement home and a 4th grade class from Kentfield’s Bacich Elementary School. Residents of The Tamalpais retirement community and students from Jennifer Sterling’s fourth grade class at Kentfield’s Bacich Elementary School used LEGOS to build their own version of the Great Wall of China on January 30 during their regular visit arranged through LITA’s Bridging Generations program. Led by guest Tim Bowen, Founder and President of Play-Well TEKnologies, the activity involved small groups of seniors and students building segments of the wall that were then all connected. Bowen volunteered his time and brought the supplies to facilitate this activity.
“We are so glad that Tim approached us to conduct this engaging activity since it enabled the students to teach something new to the seniors, most of whom had never played with LEGOS before,” said Dena Selix, LITA’s Intergenerational Coordinator and a credentialed teacher. “Our goal with Bridging Generations is to bring seniors and students together through sing happy birthday in german meaningful lessons and activities that foster ongoing relationships throughout the school year. Ironically, by building a wall together today, the seniors and students built upon their relationships with each other.”
In its fifth year, LITA’s Bridging Generations program matches elementary school students from schools around Marin to visit regularly with residents of long-term care facilities throughout the county.
